Built on the banks of the Liri river Sora is a town of Lazio in the province of Frosinone. It has a population of about 26,000. The area has been damaged several times by earthquakes, including a devastating one in 1915. Its location on the river provides hydro-electric power for manufacturing of furniture, paper and textiles.

In pre-Roman times it was inhabited by the Volsci, an ancient Italic tribe. Sora fell to Rome in the 4th century BC. The area was occupied by the Normans in1062. It was declared a royal city by the king of Naples in the 14th century. Sora was a center of resistance against the French under Napoleon. The Tomassi surname appears as early as 1744 in government records.
