Christmas at Avery St
The artificial white tree with the rotating color wheel. Those Lifesavers’ candy boxes with $5 inside-at least until you were 18.

From Roseann Farber….
These are some of my memories of 404 Avery St.
I always loved the grape arbor – it was a wonderful place to enjoy reading a book.
The ironing board in the wall of the kitchen was amazing!
I thought everyone had a metal trash can full of flour in their basement kitchen.
The telephone table in the dining room was the coolest thing ever!
I didn’t like going into the root cellar – it was dark and there were spiders!
My fondest memories are of Christmas. So much food! I always think of Aunt Tina when I arrange cookies on a plate. She was a perfectionist and she taught me how to do it right!
This is my attempt at a poem for Christmas:
Twas the night before Christmas,
And all through 404 Avery Street,
Everyone was bustling,
To get ready for the Christmas Eve feast!
There is baccala and calamari,
Pasta with anchovies and we see the smelt frying,
So much fish – the smell is delicious,
Let’s eat already – we’re starving!
There are bowls of lupini beans.
And orange slices with sugar have been arranged with great care.
There’s much laughing and talking,
Everyone has something to share!
After dinner we’re full to bursting,
Can we possibly eat anymore?
The bakers have been busy for weeks,
Now we have cookies galore!
We head to church for midnight mass,
It is a blessing to be with our family tonight.
We wish everyone we see,
Buon Natale on this holy night!
I recall vividly the desire as a child of wanting to go to grandma’s house for the Christmas Eve feast but my parent’s had a requirement that you had to be able to stay awake to attend midnight mass first! I was probably 8 or 9 years before I had what it took to participate! I remember the dining room table was overflowing with different foods, the kitchen smelled great and all the aunts and uncles chatting away and did I mention the FOOD!
I also remember having to go to grandma’s house with my father and shoveling out the driveway after heavy snow storms. To a little kid that driveway had no end and it seemed like there was a storm every week back then! We did get hot chocolate after so I guess it was worth it.
